Tsukiji Complex

Architecture Design

2025

I designed a mixed-use complex integrating commercial facilities, a library, and a nursery on a site in Tsukiji, Tokyo, where redevelopment is planned. Following the relocation of the Central Wholesale Market to Toyosu, large-scale redevelopment is planned for the former site, while the Tsukiji Outer Market to the north continues to thrive. The project site is located across Shin-Ohashi-dori from the outer market, serving as a node between Tsukiji and Ginza. The building exposes its reinforced concrete rigid-frame structure, with numerous slabs arranged within this three-dimensional grid. Stairs connect the slabs like a three-dimensional maze. The slabs vary in size, and their placement is determined by function. The maze-like circulation separates tourists and commercial visitors from local residents using the library and nursery. Though spatially adjacent on the same site, the non-intersecting circulation paths maintain both functionality and safety.
